I think it's going to be an interesting season, with a lot of it hanging in the balance of the brutal start to the season. Win against Northern Illinois and be 2-3 going in to that back stretch starting with Michigan State is big. I think they do in fact beat NIU and get things going when they travel to Michigan State. Then you have what I think is the 'easiest' part of the schedule playing Purdue and Indiana at home. They have to get things really going in that three game stretch. I think they do and end up 7-5, and travel to a bowl game for the first time since 2007.

It might sound like a stretch coming off the last two years, but this team has a chance to win some games. Scheelhaase has the respect of all of the guys and has the type of leadership to win games. You can see it in practice and talking to the other players on the team how much they respect him. At the end of the day, a lot of it comes down to how they play against Missouri and if they can get a win vs. NIU, get some confidence going in to the heart of that schedule.

Nothern Illinois and Michigan State are the two key games on the schedule in my opinion. Like you said Brian, if they can come out of that tough early stretch with three wins it will be a victory. I see every game of the second half of the season as a toss-up at this point. If they can get through the first half with any kind of momentum the win total at the end of the year could really be surprising to some.

  • If Illinois beats Missouri, the Zooker wins at least 8 and is Big Ten Coach of the Year.

  • Offense should move the ball. Coach Petrino has brought some much needed energy to this unit. I have been very impressed with #5.

  • If Nathan Scheelhaase can orchestrate the offense and the defense makes some big plays and creates some turnovers, then it will be a fun season to watch.

I see 6 wins that's a pretty tough schedule. I can see where they might be so beat up that they split Minnesota and Northwestern even though they should be able to beat both. I still think they will be a fun team to watch. Man I can't for football to start.

I agree NIU will be hungry and prepared. Illinois will need to be ready for Coach Kill and company.
